"The infallible rule of interpretation of Scripture is the Scripture itself: and therefore, when there is a question about the true and full sense of any Scripture (which is not manifold, but one), it must be searched and known by other places that speak more clearly."

(Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 1 Section 9)

The Five Solas

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Also core to our belief are the Five Solas listed below. These Five Solas are crucial to the church of God today because of their:

1. Gospel Clarity: They guard against legalism, works-righteousness, and false gospels.

2. Christ-Centeredness: They keep us focus on Christ’s finished work, not our human merit.

3. Sanctification Continuity: They remind us to continually reform according to Scripture.

These Five Solas remain vital because they safeguard the purity of the gospel and ensure that salvation is credited to God’s grace alone, received by faith alone, found in Christ alone, based on Scripture alone, for God’s glory alone.

These Five Solas are:

1. Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone)

Scripture alone, because the Bible alone is the supreme and final authority for Christian faith and practice, not church tradition or human teachings.

Its importance: This ensures that all doctrines are grounded in God’s Word rather than man-made traditions or church hierarchy.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

2. Sola Fide (Faith alone)

Salvation is received through faith alone, not by any works or merit.

Its importance: This reminds us of God's gospel teaching that we are justified (i.e. declared righteous) before God only by trusting in Christ’s finished work, not by our works or efforts.

“For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17).

3. Sola Gratia (Grace alone)

Salvation is obtained entirely by God’s grace, not by our human efforts or cooperation.

Its importance: This reiterates to us that even our faith is a gift of God (Ephesians 2:8–9), thus removes any pride in us and ensures all glory goes to God.

"But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)" (Ephesians 2:4-5)

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

4. Solus Christus (Christ alone)

Only Jesus Christ alone, not saints, priests, or Mary, can reconcile sinners to God.

Its importance: This affirms to us according to the Scriptures that Christ’s one sacrifice at the cross alone is fully sufficient for our salvation, and no additional mediators or works are needed.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).

5. Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God alone)

All of life and our salvation exists for God’s glory, not our human credit, achievement or glory.

Its importance: This directs our worship, life, doctrines and good works entirely to God, and counters any human-centered religion.

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6)

"For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure" (Philippians 2:13)

“He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).
